Age of Wonders III is a 4X turn-based strategy game developed by Triumph Studios. The game is set in a high fantasy world where players rule their empire and fight against other empires in a struggle for power. Players can customise the leader of their empire by choosing a race, class, and magic specialisation. These choices determine what type of units, spells, and technologies are available to the player and thus result in a large variety of playstyles.
I worked on Age of Wonders III as a design intern during the final months before release. In this period I finalised the design of certain gameplay mechanics and user interface elements and ensured proper implementation. I also created the closed-beta version of the stand-alone scenario 'Return of the Ancients'. This map went on to be one of the stand-alone scenarios that shipped with the game.
My biggest contribution to Age of Wonders III is my work on gameplay descriptions as I was responsible for writing the vast majority of ability, spell, and unit descriptions in the game. I have written over 18.000 words worth of descriptions that explain gameplay mechanics to the player. These descriptions include functional elements such as the stats of abilities, spells, and units. But the descriptions also include elements that give narrative context to gameplay mechanics in order to merge the gameplay and setting of Age of Wonders III into a cohesive whole.
I have written these descriptions in a format that allows them to be used in a variety of contexts without feeling out of place. Because of this the same ability descriptions are used throughout the game in items, unit panels, skill windows, and the in-game manual. This approach reduces localization costs and keeps the maintenance of descriptions managable. Furthermore, I have experience formatting my work in a localisation friendly format that allows designers to adjust gameplay values (e.g. damage, movement speed, gameplay icons) simultaneously across all languages post-localisation.
